City Lights
Greetings from Nairobi! I’m in Kenya for two weeks during the school holiday. I left from Malualkon on Friday morning in a Cessna 206. We flew for about three hours; Jan and I got off in Juba, and the Smiths continued to Uganda. I got to sit up front and talk to the pilot and listen to the radio. Fulfilling some childhood dreams here.

The most prominent feeling of this trip so far has been cold. I had a high fever on Thursday and missed the last day of school. The fever rose again on the plane, and I had chills. In Juba, Jan and I went to a restaurant, so we sat in air conditioning, and I ordered a Coke. The slogans don’t lie. It was mighty refreshing. Traveling to Nairobi was remarkably smooth, and we arrived early. This is a colder season in Nairobi, so I have already been very grateful for my sweatshirt and long-sleeves. Finally, we had ice cream for dessert on Friday night!
I haven’t been in Nairobi 24 hours yet, but already I think I will really enjoy my time here. I am staying at the AIM Mayfield guesthouse, a beautiful old house with many, many books. If you know me, that means I will be happy for quite some time. As I am writing, it’s Saturday afternoon, and I can hear the choir practicing across the street at a large Baptist church. I am looking forward to church tomorrow and two weeks ahead of good food, rest, and adventures.
